Rudolf Rassendyll, an Englishman travelling through the fictional land of ruritania, bears an uncanny resemblande to the country's King. A plot to streal the crown finds the King drugged on the day of his coronation, and Rudolf must take his place in order to avert disaster. When the King is kidnapped by his conniving brother, Rudolf sets off on a swashbuckling adventure to foil his plans.
