The Way We Live Now
The Way We Live Now, published in 1875 after first appearing in serial form, is largely regarded as Anthony Trollope's finest work of his lengthy Victorian career. After leaving England to travel abroad, Trollope penned the novel, which is a biting satire. When Trollope returned, he was astonished to see how ingrained greed and dishonesty had grown in England. Trollope spared no wicked component he saw in commerce, politics, social classes, literature, and numerous vice-related activities in his quest to expose the dishonesty and dissipation he discovered. Trollope drew on these scandals to demonstrate the extent to which dishonesty and avarice can be devastating. Trollope was inspired by the destruction caused by a number of well-known financial frauds of the nineteenth century.
